ANZ Yarra Blitz - by Yarra Riverkeeper Association

Let's clean your Yarra! Join us on Saturday 27 March for our next cleanup event and paddle and/or walk against plastic.

Your Yarra is the largest contributor of litter into Port Phillip Bay.

Picking up every 'litter' bit counts. Join us on Saturday 27 March for our next clean up event and love your Yarra.

We'll provide the gloves, bags, kayaks* and safety gear.

This is our 8th Blitz Event! Over the course of 2018 - 2020 we have collected more than 38,000 kg of waste from Melbourne's waterways, stopping the lifecycle of plastic and polystyrene from further degrading into our waterways and harming our precious wildlife.

On land or on water, you can be part of our story of reducing the impacts of litter on your Yarra and working towards protecting the health of all that call the catchment home.

Thank you to ANZ Community Foundation for supporting this event.

* Yarra Riverkeeper members are given first priority to kayaks, you can sign up to become a member here

Our ticketing system will be a little different this year!

To help keep physical distancing restrictions in place we have allocated tickets per activity. You can choose between:

1. Litter picking by foot: This is for those who are looking at walking along the river / on land and collecting rubbish

2. 2. A walking tour / orientation: Join us on an educational tour of the area

3. Kayaks (double or single): Reserve a kayak and paddle against plastic! Please note that Yarra Riverkeeper members are given first preference to our kayaks. You can sign up to become a member here

Can't make the event? Donate $15 and you're helping to remove approximately 1kg of litter from the Yarra and its parks

This is a COVID-safe event and we will be adhering to the the latest health advice and public event requirements.

In conjunction with the latest health advice by the Department of Health and Human Services Victoria, it is a requirement to bring a face mask with you unless you have a valid reason not to, and to maintain physical distancing practices.

You can access our CovidSafe Events Checklist here.

If you feel unwell on the day of the event, please stay home. If you have any questions about our COVID safe procedures please email info@yarrariver.org.au

Nature for Life Rally - Victorian National Parks Association

Nature for Life Rally - Victorian National Parks Association

NATURE FOR LIFE RALLY

Date: Thursday 28 November
Time: 12pm–2pm
Place: Parliament steps, Spring Street, Melbourne
Followed by: BYO picnic in Treasury Gardens

WHAT
It’s very clear from the current state of Victoria’s environment that bold action is needed by the Andrews Government to protect the places and wildlife we love – our National Parks, forests, rivers, beaches, oceans, native plants and animals.

On Thursday 28 November, the fifth anniversary of the election of the Andrews Government, environment and community groups from across Victoria will rally together to demand real action to protect Victoria's nature. Will you join us?

WHY
As Victoria's biodiversity continues to rapidly decline, habitats become more stressed, species become more threatened, and the climate crisis escalates, we can’t waste any more time.

So let’s get together to show our community expects more action by the Andrews Government to address these urgent problems.

We will be urging for:
- New and better-funded National Parks
- Better protection for our forests, rivers, beaches, oceans and wildlife.
- Stronger laws to protect threatened species and habitats that address the size of the crisis we are facing.

THE RALLY
We need to make sure there are thousands of us to demonstrate that people who know and care about nature want action – that Victorians want new National Parks and better protection for nature.

The current lack of leadership to protect nature is real. However, the rally will not be all doom and gloom. We want to deliver a positive message of what can and should be done in this term of government to protect nature.

To make this happen, we need everyone to bring a banner, sign, puppet or other craftwork to represent the special place you think deserves better from the government.

SPREAD THE WORD
To make this rally have the biggest impact possible we need your help! Please spread the word by:

- Sharing the Facebook event https://www.facebook.com/events/901003676966816/
- Inviting your friends and family
- Sticking up posters or handing out fliers in your neighbourhood (contacts below)

We hope you can join us to stand up for our forests, rivers, beaches, oceans and wildlife and demand more respect for life and protection for nature.

CONTACT
Please contact Sarah Day (sarah@vnpa.org.au) to order promotion posters and flyers to put up in your local community, or for more information.

Spring Clean the City

Spring Clean the City

On Saturday 21st of September, Spring Clean the City will be running their incredible Spring Clean in collaboration with other groups, such as BeachPatrol, Love our Street 3207, and Clean Up Australia, among others! Click on the link and make sure you sign up! There will be kayaks, lots of litter to pick up, and good fun!

It’s time to Spring into action

"Spring Clean the City" is back for a second year - bigger and better than before! Brought to you by anti-litter volunteer networks Beach Patrol, Love Our Street, Clean Up Australia and the Boomerang Alliance. We will be cleaning the Melbourne CBD on #worldcleanupday, on Saturday the 21st of September.

Through hosting Melbourne's biggest street clean event, we'll be highlighting the state's litter problem, which is mostly caused by disposable #singleuseplastic.

Items like cans, bottles, takeaway containers, coffee cups, lids, and straws are ending up in our waterways and beaches where they are doing damage to marine life. What's dropped in the street ends up in the Bay. We want real action on the main litter items!

This event is not intended to show the city lacks appeal or amenity due to litter. Melbourne City Council shares our concern about litter and waste. Our aim is to demonstrate the impact of litter, and provide compelling evidence for a 10 cents container deposit scheme (cash for containers) and other litter-prevention initiatives.

Bring your friends, family and co-workers!

EVENT INFO:

  • Arrive at 9 am at meeting point for a 9:30 am clean start.

  • The clean will go for approximately two hours.

  • You will be given a map with a small section within the CBD to collect litter in.

  • Once you're finished, return your litter to the meeting point on Southbank Promenade.

  • Please be SunSmart, wear enclosed shoes and have some water in a reusable bottle.

  • If you have your own reusable gloves, bucket/bag and tongs - please bring these along.

  • This is a free family friendly event, everyone is welcome.

Bottles and cans collected will be counted, presented and photographed to demonstrate the real need for a Container Deposit Scheme in Victoria. Victoria is the only state without a refund scheme on drink containers. We will show how much of the CBD's litter is comprised of drink-related items. Last year it was ONE THIRD of the litter volume collected!

Did someone say divers?!

In collaboration with Sea Shepherd, we proudly present our second event in Frankston, Melbourne! This time we are also partnering up with Dive2U for divers to clean up submerged trash while we clean up along the coast (see bottom of event for in-water specific details)!

This is not your usual beach clean up event. This world needs more everyday superheroes to rise to the call to save this planet and our oceans, and its time to deliver! Come join us in your incredible cosplay, superhero themed outfits, or even turn up as an odd vigilante or two.

You can also come wearing a comic book themed t-shirt! Together we can raise awareness about the crisis our oceans face from waste and plastic pollution, whilst walking the talk and showing the power we have as individuals to make a bigger difference.

Event Coordinators: Lauren Sandeman and Sharan Velauthan

Meeting point: At the Sea Shepherd Marquee at Frankston Pier

Start Time and group photo: 10.40am
(Dive/Snorkel briefing 10:30am sharp)
Clean-Up: 11:00am to 12:45pm
Sorting and Counting: 12pm – 2pm

It is the middle of winter in Melbourne so please bring appropriate clothing to stay warm, enclosed shoes and water in reusable containers (no single use plastic please). If you have reusable gloves and tongs, please bring them along – we will have some available but they will be in limited supply.

We would like to acknowledge the Boonwrrung people as the Traditional Owners of the land and water we will be meeting on, and pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging. We cannot hope to have environmental justice without appropriate rights and recognition of First Nations People.

Waterway Clean Up: Perth by Kathmandu and Tangaroa Blue

Help keep plastic and debris out of our oceans and waterways. Sign up to a conservation event in Perth:
https://www.kathmandu.com.au/make-a-difference

After the clean-up, the team will categorise all rubbish collected and load the data into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative database. The Tangaroa Blue Foundation uses the data gathered to help communities create ‘source reduction plans’. This means that we can try to address the cause of marine debris at the source and try to limit the amount of rubbish created in the first place.

Don't forget to register! In order to properly prepare for the Waterway Clean Up events, we request that all attendees please register on the form here: https://kathmandu.typeform.com/to/wzyTfh
